Punahou School is actively recruiting a Director of Bands. The Director of Bands will conduct the Wind Ensemble as well as additional concert bands in the high school and grades 5-8 as part of their teaching responsibilities. The Director of Bands will also serve as a Sub-Department Head for the K–12 Music program. The Director will be responsible for the leadership and vision for the Punahou Band Program, which encompasses beginning, intermediate, and advanced bands in grades 5–12. The Director of Bands will also provide oversight for the Marching Band as well as the Jazz Band. They will work to promote and continuously align the Band program with the Values of Music at Punahou and with the Aims of a Punahou Education. They will collaborate actively and effectively with the music leadership team, music department and music school faculty, and other colleagues across campus. They must embrace the mission of Punahou School and be dedicated to the education of the whole student.
The Director of Bands possesses an excellent music and teaching background, band program leadership experience, strong overall administrative and communication skills, demonstrating organization and the ability to work collaboratively and effectively with a wide range of constituents, stakeholders, and community partners. The Director of Bands serves as an excellent ambassador for the Punahou Band Program and the K–12 Music Department, establishing, maintaining and cultivating professional relationships at Punahou and with the larger Band community, both locally and nationally. They will supervise the Grades 5–12 Band program faculty and ensure that day-to-day operations are run effectively, including instrument maintenance and repair, instrument and repertoire inventory, festivals and performances, ensemble placements, and ensemble travel. The Director of Bands will have the opportunity to work with the Music leadership team to reinvigorate a band booster program. The Director of Bands should have extensive experience developing curriculum and assessment, directing and programming repertoire for beginning, intermediate, and advanced ensembles. The Director of Bands is a visionary educator who can lead an exceptional band program.

Bachelor’s degree in music education or applied music, Master’s preferred, demonstrating substantial knowledge of music pedagogy, band literature/repertoire, and music theory.
Strong performing skills and experience as an instrumentalist.
Five (5) years of teaching experience in the classroom.
Three (3) years of leadership experience in building and maintaining a successful large school Band Program.
Active membership and participation in professional associations, such as NAfME, ASBDA, and OBDA.
Demonstrated ability to offer and teach a comprehensive instrumental curriculum, utilizing a variety of teaching methods and resources.
Commitment to the intrinsic value of music and ability to articulate the educational value of music; a desire to successfully communicate and model these values for student musicians.
Command of and effective/appropriate selection of repertoire that provides students with both breadth and depth of experiences in a variety of musical periods, styles, and influences in the band repertoire.
Knowledge and experience in the field of music education as demonstrated through
The development and improvement of comprehensive curricular plans;
The implementation of effective teaching practices, including appropriate and contemporary uses of classroom management skills, motivational methods, evaluation and assessment practices;
An understanding of human behavior and performance, which allows for differences in ability, personality and interests, learning and motivation;
A strong commitment to and passion for Band, which cultivates excitement and love of music among students at all levels.
Competent technology skills including ability to use Internet and Email, basic digital recording equipment and software, administrative procedures and systems such as Microsoft Word, Excel, managing files and records.
Understanding and sensitivity to the social, educational, and cultural needs of the Punahou community. Ability to establish, maintain and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with members of the community outside of Punahou.
Excellent organizational and anticipatory thinking skills; able to organize and prioritize multiple responsibilities; able to utilize time management skills; able to meet deadlines; able to accurately and effectively maintain records, reports and correspondence.
