JSerra Catholic High School Performing Arts Department is looking for a dynamic choral music educator to direct its well-established choral music program, including teaching an introductory Concert Choir, an intermediate Women’s Ensemble, and an advanced Chamber Singers. Additional teaching areas may be considered as applicable. The ideal candidate for this position would be an experience vocalist and conductor who enjoys working with high school aged students and their families. Applicants should have strong musicianship, confident leadership skills, the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and administrators in a team decision-making environment, excellent oral and written communicative skills, and proficiency in technology. Experienced teachers are preferred.
Plan and implement an engaging and comprehensive choral music curriculum to include vocal technique, ensemble performance, student leadership, music theory, and music history/culture
Organize and direct 3-4 annual choral concerts, collaborate with other Performing and Visual Arts programs to produce the annual interdisciplinary Winter Showcase, provide music for 4-6 all-school masses per year (in collaboration with the Vice President of Mission and Faith), perform at other school events as needed, and seek out appropriate opportunities to participate in festivals and other community events
Conduct rehearsals during class time and outside of the regular school day as necessary, including a weekly two-hour evening rehearsal and dress rehearsals before each concert
Serve as the music director for the theatre program’s annual musical (in collaboration with the Theatre Director)
Manage the acquisition, distribution, collection, storage, and upkeep of necessary teaching materials, including sheet music, wardrobe, musical instruments, etc.
Provide supervision and oversight for the staff accompanist, any other contracted program staff (i.e. voice teachers, guest conductors, choreographers, etc.), and all parent/community volunteers including the Choir Parent Booster Club
Coordinate and lead domestic and international tours as appropriate for the program.
Oversee choral track students enrolled in the Arts Magnet Program, including auditions, assessment of program requirements, and participation in outside field trips and other events (in collaboration with the Arts magnet Program Director)
Provide mentorship for student leaders and foster a sense of community and belonging amongst all choir students
Supervise students inside and outside of the classroom as necessary, such as before/after school, at break, and at lunchtime
Communicate, consult, and co-operate with other members of the school’s staff as applicable
Participate in staff, group, or other meetings related to the school as required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Proficiency in leading a productive rehearsal and conducting a large choral ensemble
Advanced knowledge of vocal skills and ability to demonstrate sound vocal technique
Familiarity with liturgical music, especially regarding traditional Catholic practices
Experience in concert programing, curriculum design, budget management, student assessment, and program promotion/recruiting
Excellent interpersonal communication skills – both in writing and as a speaker
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree required
Single subject credential or master’s degree preferred
Previous high school teaching experience desired
