Riverdale Country School is a Pre-K through grade 12 independent school in New York City committed to empowering lifelong learners by developing minds, building character, and creating community in order to change our world for the good. Riverdale seeks to reflect the New York metropolitan area's diversity in its students, faculty, and staff. Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) is the foundational core of the anti-racist, anti-bias, and transformational work that Riverdale is doing to help students, faculty/staff, families, and alumni feel seen, heard, and valued. The school enrolls about 1,200 students who collectively reside in 104 different zip codes. Approximately 42% of our student body are students of color.
We seek to employ people who engage in all aspects of work with a student-centered approach, an open mind, passion, and a willingness to support the greater community. At Riverdale, we recognize that the work of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging is iterative and requires a consistent commitment. Ideal candidates display that commitment in their work and their approach to teaching and learning.
As the world faces the immense challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic, Riverdale Country School continues to prioritize its community members' health, safety, and well-being. Individuals are required to wear masks at all times except when eating, and our strict adherence to physical distancing guidelines means that we limit the number of students in our classrooms. We currently provide free ongoing COVID-19 testing for all employees and also require students to be tested regularly. We are fortunate to have a sprawling campus with ample outdoor space and have upgraded the air filtration systems in our buildings. These elements have allowed us to maintain a rich learning experience for students during this difficult time.
Riverdale’s Department of Music seeks an enthusiastic, collegial, and knowledgeable cellist/cello teacher to develop technique and musical understanding in Middle and Upper School cello and bass students. The position will involve teaching sections of sixth and seventh-grade cello/bass classes in collaboration with the violin/viola teacher, being an assistant director of the orchestra, coaching the orchestra’s cello and bass sections, and coaching chamber music groups.
A wide familiarity with chamber music and orchestra repertoire across genres is crucial. Creating and adapting musical arrangements for all ensembles where needed using a music notation computer application is essential, as is the ability to adapt cello parts to students’ varying levels. Keeping accurate records of repairs performed and of cellos/basses assigned to each student for school and home use is important for maintaining the school’s instrument collection, assessing the instruments, and arranging repairs. The ability to make recordings of all Middle School and Orchestra (and chamber parts as needed) for students to practice and/or record with is necessary. The willingness to initiate collaboration with a variety of private lesson teachers in the student’s best interests is helpful, as is familiarity with solo cello repertoire.
Having in-depth professional experience as a cellist is highly useful and inspiring to students of all ages. An understanding of bass fingerings and bow technique will make a candidate especially attractive.
This position may be either .75 or full-time, depending on student enrollment.
All candidates for Riverdale teaching positions should demonstrate an interest in engaging students in an environment that is supportive and rigorous and will participate in community activities, including advisor groups, service opportunities, or other co-curricular programs. Our Middle School and Upper School are located together on the Hill Campus, so candidates who demonstrate enthusiasm for teaching across the divisions are especially attractive.

A brief solo audition is a requisite as a part of the interview process.
