DESCRIPTION: Humboldt State University's Department of Music invites applications for an academic year tenure-track faculty position in Music Education, with a secondary emphasis in Brass and/or Woodwinds, and experience in Conducting and/or Music Technology and/or Commercial Music.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: A Ph.D. or equivalent in Music Education or related field from an accredited college or university is required at the time of appointment. ABD will be considered. If ABD, degree requirements must be completed by August 2022.
The successful candidate must demonstrate the following:
Experience teaching at the college/university level;
Successful credentialed teaching at the K-12 level;
Knowledge of national and state content standards, state frameworks, music education methodologies such as Orff, Dalcroze, Suzuki, Kodaly, and Gordon, etc.;
Knowledge of research content and methods in the field of music education including topics such as learning theories, instructional modalities, learning handicaps/challenges, lesson planning, group versus individual instruction, etc.;
Potential for success in recruitment and interaction with statewide school music teachers, private studio music teachers, and members of the community;
Willingness to take on a leadership position within the department;
Five or more years of successful private teaching of multiple brass and/or woodwind instruments at all levels from beginners to very advanced students;
Experience and/or commitment to promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds;
Teaching experience or potential for effective and excellence in teaching using a variety of methodologies;
Interest, experience and/or preparation to teach major core courses as well as general education level courses;
Understanding of the dynamics of diversity and inclusion in education and a demonstrated ability to incorporate this understanding, as appropriate, in one's teaching, scholarship, and service;
Capacity and experience in the development of online learning experiences and the use of online instructional technologies;
Capacity to innovate curriculum to meet contemporary needs of professional fields;
Commitment to participating in professional development opportunities that build effectiveness in areas of inclusion, intercultural communication, and advancing equity and diversity; and
Ability to collaborate with and communicate effectively with diverse students and colleagues. Preferred qualifications for this position include:
Two or more years of successful teaching at the college/university level;
Five or more years of successful credentialed teaching at the K-12 level;
Record of success as an instrumental performer;
Record of success as a conductor;
Demonstrated success in teaching students from diverse backgrounds;
Demonstrated success in recruitment and interaction with statewide school music teachers, private studio music teachers, and members of the community;
Demonstrated involvement with statewide, local, and/or national music educator organizations;
Experience playing or teaching Mariachi;
Experience with pedagogy of Music Technology and/or Commercial Music;
A strong interest in program and curricular development, and a commitment to undergraduate teaching and advising;
Capacity to engage in grant writing activities;
Ability to develop, implement, and assess programs in ways that advance equitable and inclusive learning communities; and
Commitment to involving students in performance and/or scholarly activities related to music education.

PROFESSIONAL DUTIES: Candidates should be committed to teaching excellence and to building a strong record of scholarship and creative activities. Instructional assignments will be consistent with the skills of the successful candidate and the programmatic needs of the department and students. Instructional assignments may include: Elementary Music Methods, Secondary Music Methods, Student Teacher Supervision, Conducting classes, studio lessons, and other courses as needed.
The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching; research, scholarship, and creative activity; and service to the University, profession, and to the community. These responsibilities include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide communities, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participating in traditional academic functions. Probationary faculty are typically provided ongoing mentorship to be a successful member of the faculty. During the first two years of the probationary period, teaching responsibilities will be reduced by approximately one course each semester. The reduced teaching load supports the establishment of research, scholarship and/or creative activities required for retention, tenure, and promotion.
Humboldt State also continues to build unique and innovative learning opportunities for students, bridging the sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities. HSU is a leader in “learning communities” that build relationships between students, faculty, staff, administrators, and the community. GENERAL INFORMATION: The Department of Music has 5 full-time and 15 part-time faculty, and approximately 40 music majors. The Music Department, a member of the National Association of Schools of Music, offers a Bachelor of Arts degree with concentrations in Music Education, Performance, Composition and Liberal Arts. Humboldt State University sits on the traditional homelands of the Wiyot people in what is currently called Arcata, CA. The Wiyot people call the area Goudi'ni (over in the woods). The Humboldt State University campus in Northern California is in close proximity to several thriving Native American tribes and communities. Humboldt State currently has the largest percentage of Native American students in the CSU system and has over 30 Native American faculty and staff many from local area California Indian tribes.
