The Calhoun School, a progressive independent school located on Manhattan's Upper West Side, is seeking a full-time permanent Middle and Upper School Chorus teacher starting August 2022.
The successful candidate will have a passion for working with Middle and Upper School students in an innovative, supportive environment. Calhoun inspires a passion for learning through a progressive approach to education that values intellectual pursuit, creativity, diversity and community involvement. Teaching and learning begin with the needs, interests, questions and diverse life experiences of the individual. Calhoun is committed to developing a sense of empathy, equity and justice among students. The Middle and Upper School Chorus teacher reports directly to the Director of Music.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS and RESPONSIBILITIES
- Cultivating a lifelong love of learning and music;
- Teaching music to 6th-12th grade students in a classroom setting;
- Developing curricula and implementing lessons that incorporate a range of learning approaches to both support and challenge diverse learners to reach their fullest potential;
- Presenting Music curriculum to parents on curriculum evenings
- Collaborating with other teachers to coordinate music activities as they relate to the broader life of the school
- Serving as a cluster advisor to either Middle or Upper School students
- Keeping anecdotal and assessment records to inform thoughtful, comprehensive reports;
- Fulfilling duties, responsibilities and commitments as outlined in the Employee Handbook;
- Ongoing parent communication;
- Commitment to school-wide initiatives and participation in school wide professional development days.
SKILLS/COMPETENCIES
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
- Ability to lead with grace, humor and humility;
- Strong affinity for, and commitment to, progressive, humanistic education;
- Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities;
- Interest in teaching and working with Middle and Upper School students;
- Passion for Music, and for Vocal Arts in particular, with proficiency in keyboard skills;
- Ability to work in a collaborative, open working environment.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
- Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree (or degree in progress) preferred;
- Commitment to diversity, collegiality and school mission;
- Experience teaching Music, preferably in a progressive environment;
- Candidates will have a deep appreciation for student-centered, engaging and innovative teaching practices.
